Bone Broth: the #1 Superfood (+ A Giveaway!)

Bone broth has to be one of the most bizarre health trends in history. I remember when my cousin first tried to convince me of the power of bone broth – I looked at her like she was crazy. There was no chance in hell I was going to somehow acquire animal bones, slow cook said animal bones in water for almost 24 hours, and then drink the remaining liquid…ew, right?

img_0831Wrong! Once I was finally convinced to try bone broth, I immediately fell in love. Guys, I love bone broth. Drinking a warm mug of bone broth is strangely comforting to me; it reminds me of eating chicken noodle soup to heal when I was young. And guess what! It is not a coincidence that people have consumed chicken soup when they are sick for centuries; in fact, people eat chicken soup when they are sick because the broth contains nutrients that are absolutely vital to the healing process and are almost impossible to acquire anywhere else.

Some of you may know about the healing power of bone broth, but for those of you who don’t, here are three of the top benefits of bone broth:

  1. Protects & Repairs Joints: Bone broth contains tons of collagen, the the protein that makes up bones, tendons, ligaments, and tissues. The collagen in bone broth can help to restore cartilage in our joints as it diminishes due to age, disease, or natural wear-and-tear associated with running, playing sports, etc. Bone broth also contains gelatin, which acts like a soft cushion between your bones to prevent pain and provides the building blocks we need to build and maintain strong bones (WAY better than milk, trust me on this one). It also has plenty of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including glucosamine, which are commonly taken as supplements to reduce joint pain and inflammation. Do you believe me yet?
  2. Heals the Gut & Aids Digestion: Bone broth has a wide variety of amino acids – including glycine and glutamine – in large quantities. These amino acids, as well as the gelatin and collagen I mentioned above, work together to heal the lining of your gut (which is probably damaged from all of the processed foods and medications we consume!) by maintaining the layer of mucus that keeps gut microbes away from the intestinal barrier³. Drinking bone broth should improve your digestion almost instantly as glycine stimulates the production of stomach acid and bile acid.
  3. Nourishes Hair, Skin, and Nails: The collagen and gelatin in bone broth keep skin looking youthful and bright, and many of the other 19+ easy-to-absorb, essential and non-essential amino acids and innumerable nutrients provide the building blocks for strong nails and long, thick hair.

This list is certainly not exhaustive – check out the sources at the bottom of this post for more information if you’re not yet convinced. But if I have persuaded you to start to drink the nectar of the gods, where do you go from here?

  1. I’m really working on healing my gut and have read so many wonderful things about bone broth. I go to The University of Alabama and it’s soooo hard to find bone broth anywhere here!

  2. After spending the last 2 years going to doctors to no avail, last week I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The rheumatologist told me it was most likely caused by another disorder I have – Polycysyic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). When I got home, I researched the link between the two and found that the cause was insulin resistance (which I am). I have read that the paleo diet can help those with fibromyalgia and help with insulin resistance and reactive hypoglycemia. I also have tons of stomach issues due to Fibro and I am sick and tired of feeling sick and tired! I am trying so hard to stick to a paleo diet but it is difficult when your small town does not carry most items – especially grass fed & etc.. I’ve seen you use bone broth in everything and I peruse thrive market ALL the time dreaming of everything I wish I could order! I would love love love to use bone broth to make soups and to experience all the benefits of using it in my food!

  3. I have never tried Bone Broth but I would love to! I am a college athlete and I lost a lot of weight because my IBS restricted me to very few dining hall foods. I would love this as a supplement and to help my cracking joints!

    1. Ugh, college dining halls are SO tough for those of us with compromised digestion. This bone broth would be especially good for you because you can store it in your dorm room without refrigeration!!!

  4. I was gluten free for almost two years and I did Paleo for a couple months. The biggest reason I gave it up was the intensive labor was just too much for my body. I have chronic pain so I’m trying to clean up my diet as much as possible without being overwhelmingly restrictive! I think it will definitely help, I never felt as good as when I was Paleo. Thank you so much for the giveaway, this would be amazing to win! Ig: jolenej1030

    1. Finding a balance between taking care of yourself with food (i.e. Paleo) and taking care of yourself in general (i.e. adequate rest and not overdoing it) can be SO hard. Buying bone broth would definitely make that a little easier! It might also be worth asking a family member or close friend to help you meal prep once a week so that it doesn’t tire you out too much. I used to have my mom help me, and even now my boyfriend will come help me chop and lift heavy pans so my joints don’t end up hurting too much.

      1. Yes, I’ve enlisted my husband in doing meal prep every Sunday now! Oh, and I’m a champion over-doer lol. Sometimes a grocery shopping trip can take a couple days to recover from. I’m ordering through Hy-Vee online and having them deliver to help. We’re adding a new puppy to the chaos in a few weeks and it’s worth it to save my energy & sanity, haha. I’m actually resting right now after doing garage sale prep (I’m having one in three weeks) and it’s the perfect time for meal planning! Thanks for all your hard work here, I know how exhausting a blog can be! 😘

  5. I teach a lot of evening fitness classes and it’s hard to get in quality protein later at night when I don’t have time to cook something for dinner. Bone broth would be a great healing, quick source of protein and nutrients for me! Thanks for this giveaway!

  6. I like drinking a seasoned cup on cold mornings like coffee, mostly I use it to deglaze pans, make a quick sauce or as a soup base. I also use it to reinvigorate foods I am reheating.
